Last part .. 10 day self-drive tour of Ireland : October 2009
Hubby and I didn’t really have a sightseeing plan around Sligo, the plan being a night’s stopover before heading back to Dublin across country from west to east. I would have loved to have explored the countryside where the poet, WB Yeats, was born. In my travel book there is a route which goes past sandy bays and dramatic limestone ridges, through forest and alongside rivers and lakes. Lough Gill lies at the heart of Yeats country, enclosed by wooded hills crisscrossed by walking trails. En route to Dublin, we drove through part of this beautiful countryside but to explore it further would have been far nicer.
We didn’t get a chance to see Northern Ireland either …. next time …
On to Sligo. We drove through the city and around the harbour towards Rosses Point to our hotel, Radisson Blu Hotel …
Our room was in the middle at the top with a balcony and a lovely view over the harbour bay
We dumped our bags in the room and went for a long walk towards Rosses Point. It was a long day in the car
Back on the balcony … a wedding !!
… and a glorious sunset ..
Next morning … our final day on the road
As we didn’t get to Rosses Point on our walk the previous evening – it was further than we thought – we drove there before heading for the main road to Dublin. In fact we discovered that if we had gone a little further and over a rise we would have reached it !!
Looking back to Sligo from Rosses Point …
Carrick-on-Shannon, a tiny capital of Co. Leitrim, one of the least populated counties in Ireland
Reaching Dublin : we picked up our hired car from the airport and so we returned it to the airport. Catching a bus from the airport was easier than driving through the city itself
It was a fabulous trip !!!
I notice I haven’t done a post/posts on our stay in Dublin either. We stayed for a few days prior to our self-drive tour and an extra day before catching our flight home …… posts in the pipe-line 🙂
