Built by St Benedict of Nursia around 529 for the Benedictine order, the Abbey formed part of the Gustav line, a German defensive line to hold the Allied Forces from advancing any further into Italy during the Second World War.  It was ‘almost completely destroyed ‘ during the fiercest fighting that took place here between Feb – May 1944.  The Allied Forces broke the line .. the Germans withdrew .. the road to Rome was then opened.

The Abbey was rebuilt after the war
