This was very disappointing 😦 Walking from the Arch of Constantine and the Colosseum passed the Roman Forum and Palatine we came across what looked like an abandoned reconstruction site ..
Once, long ago, it was the largest stadium in Europe for mass entertainment and chariot racing – 621 m (2037ft) length and 118 m (387ft) wide. I have read two articles on this one says it could hold 150 000 spectators and the other says 250 000. Take your pick!!!! It is enormous and apparently the seating right the way around, which measures a mile, was three stories high. I think our Trafalgar Tour Director said 250 000 but not too sure about that. It is now a public park.
In ancient times, it looked very different ..
Standing in the middle of the Circus Maximus you can see the ruins of the Palace of Septimius Severus, an extension of the Domus Augustana, private home of the emperors. Emperor Septimius Severus AD 193-211 built this extension which included an impressive bath complex
Next stop .. Palatine and Roman Forum
