Lourdes, Pyrénées

At last I can sit and post a blog .. have had a busy week .. and we still haven’t purchased a toilet !!!!  – bought taps, shower fittings, tiles, and beautiful oval quartz basin.  The builder is making a washstand for us …. a toilet is next week’s mission ..

Back to France .. Lourdes – a truly humbling experience – where, Bernadette Soubirous, born in Lourdes, a miller’s daughter, who at the age of 14, was guided to a spring with miraculous healing powers at Grotte Massabielle where she experienced 18 visions of Virgin Mary.  Five million people annually visit the Grotto ..

The largest Catholic pilgrimage in France, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes (or the Domaine) is the area of ground surrounding the Grotto, an area of 52 hectares, 22 places of worship including the sacred Grotto and 2 Basilicas

Basilica of St Pius X – an underground Basilica – 12,000m sq, 191m long x 61m wide .. holds 25 000 people!  Designed by architect Pierre Vago and concecrated in 1958.  It’s in the form of an upturned ship surrounded by a walkway – it’s enormous !!  There was a mass while we were there …

Madonna incoronata ..

Madonna’s statue faces the Basilica of the Rosary and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception – one built behind and above the other.  People from all walks of life were here .. nuns, priests, nurses, disabled etc,  and ordinary people like ourselves

At the foot of the Immaculate Conception Basilica is the Rosary Basilica built 1883-1889; capacity of 1 500 ..

Around the central dome the arms are the transept and the sanctuary contain side alters with mosaic images of the 15 mysteries of the Rosary ..

Hubby and I are standing above the Basilica Rosary, at it’s dome – the Immaculate Conception Basilica behind us ..

View of Lourdes from next level .. level of Immaculate Conception Basilica  ..

Immaculate Conception Basilica, built between 1866-1872 – capacity 550 seats, bell tower of 70m high –  on top of the rock above the Grotto and behind the Basilica of the Rosary ..

Immaculate Conception Basilica .. photography was tricky with the midday bright sun outside and dark indoors ..

Back to ground level .. under the arches (a ramp to ground level) leads the way to the Grotto ..

The holiest site at Lourdes, the Grotto … next post 🙂
